Cultivating Leaders & Sustaining Communities

In Sonoma, Marin, Contra Costa and Santa Cruz County, GSE combines classroom environmental literacy curriculum with team-based, student-led outdoor learning opportunities that provide immediate opportunities to transform knowledge into skills.  By working together, students experience profound shifts in perspective, deeper conceptual understanding, and increased intellectual curiosity. Below are the pillars of how we develop community leaders.

Pillars of Our School Partnerships

School Gardens

Through in-class collaboration, after school volunteer days, weekend community workdays and summer programming, GSE is committed to maintaining school gardens to be vibrant and productive all year round. GSE has built and maintained 18 school gardens across the Bay Area that are vibrant hubs of learning and grow organic produce for community members in need.

Leadership Council

In the 2016-2017 school year we launched our county-wide leadership council. Our councils bring together youth leaders from across the County to strengthen knowledge, skills, and connections to support the next generation of community leaders committed to sustainable environmental action. PC’s facilitate and teach Roots of Success, environmental literacy curriculum to support students in earning 6 units of college credits through SFSU.

Teacher Support and Collaboration

GSE Program Coordinators spend one full day a week at each partner school, providing in-class support for hands-on environmental education, collaborating with teachers around curriculum development, helping to expand environmental programming into the broader school community.

Student Clubs

PCs provide leadership development training through GSE Eco-Action workshops as well as support students to execute on the environmental project of their choice.  Past examples include: school-wide composting, starting a new garden, hydration stations, building a greenhouse, etc.

International Exchange

GSE partners with school to provide 10 day immersive trips to Ecuador and Nicaragua. International collaboration inspires and catalyzes student involvement, leveraging the unique transformative experience of travel to increase engagement at home. Collaborative opportunities deepen our impact and amplify our students’ voices.
